Earlier this month it struck me that a trend not yet upon us, but I believe is just around the corner, is a resurgence of appreciation or perhaps a rediscovery of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I don’t know that it is some wave of nostalgia of my own or today's culture I observe, but after listening to some of those classic hits I hear a sound that is contemporary...again.
Maybe there is something in those decades, between the birth of Rock ‘n Roll and just Rock, that is in common with the world we have forty-plus years later. Sandwiched between the alienation expressed by the Beats of the 1950s post World War world and the breaking-out-all-over rebellions of the 1960s came the sharp and clear and precise sound of TJB. Maybe we need a sound of optimism and fun and precision, the sound delivered by the TJB.
The idea caused me to look through old photos and find my Herb-autographed photo of the TJB from my days as a member the fan club back in 1965. Found it and paid to have it properly framed, which seemed to be a fitting act of respect to get ready for the second coming.
Yep. The sound will return...just not sure when or down what channel, but it's coming back.
