The city's bedrook

Here is a little piece of St. Augustine to take with you, a piece of coquina, a native stone from Anastasia Island used to build the Castillo 300+ years ago along with many other things. It is the stone with which Colonial St. Augustine was built.

We think of it as a stone that says much about our city.

Coquina is a single stone made from millions of individual shells, not unlike St. Augustine's history which has taken 442 years of individuals living day to day to bring us to where we are this day, this one town; and...

Coquina is a stone that when first mined it is pliable, seemingly relaxed, just like St. Augustine, but when it is tested the stone will prove its strength, demonstrating its ability to weather the heat of battle and centuries of storms.

Keep coquina close and
you’ll keep St. Augustine close.
