From the moment the moon
lifted up over the island’s sand dunes
and crawled up through the live oak forest,
clouds floated rapidly by
obscuring its light and hiding its face
for quick moments.
It was a tease of an eclipse.
Totality was achieved
at the same moment
a wave of clouds
became near solid over the island.
The last time I saw the moon
it was out of sight.
