Ascent

from the low country
gently rising and falling and rising across the Piedmont
across the Catawba, twice,
up the mountain, across the divide and onto the plateau
beside the French Broad and Swannanoa,
pass Little Cedar and up Busbee’s toe,
up the stairs, into your room
where it was too quiet,
too empty.
