reunion

In the June I returned to North Carolina,
in the June after high school,
in the June of the Presidential Election
of Nixon and McGovern,
of make-work for high school age boys
in a mill,
painting offices for foremen
and bathrooms for men and women
and break rooms for all.

In that June Simon and Garfunkel
sang at a benefit for George McGovern
organized by Warren Beatty
in Madison Square Garden;
it was their first reunion
following their break-up
and they sang
when tears are in your eyes
i will comfort you.

The candidate was there,
in a box off to the side,
or front and center,
or standing backstage, off stage right,
watching and listening when they
promised to be like a bridge
over troubled water.

Three and a half decades later
he hears the same voice
sing the same words,
George hears Art’s art carry the words
high out over the twisted oaks of Anastasia Island,
winding roads cross and the two are in a new place
again.
