Stop 12 - The Ponce and the Bridge
The Hotel Ponce de Leon Hotel, now Flagler College, was built by Victorian railroad magnet and partner of John D. Rockefeller, Henry Flagler. Conceived as the flagship hotel of Flagler’s American Riviera, no expense was spared to weave the Old World charm and mystery of St. Augustine into The Ponce making it into an exotic playground for the rich and famous.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Place, The Bridge of Lions opened in 1927 and was quickly dubbed The Most Beautiful Bridge in Dixie. Its sweeping profile over the Matanzas River, has become an icon of the city's romance and is second only to the Castillo de San Marcos as the most universally recognized landmark of historic St. Augustine.
